I started a new editing job two months back so I haven’t updated recently. Here are a few things that are going on:

I am honored to have been chosen as a finalist of the Loft Mentorship Series this year.

I am also honored to have taught a week-long summer writing camp for kids at Crossings Art Center (Zumbrota, MN) Has it made me rethink having offspring….yes. Did it inspire me…yes.

I also taught two classes on memoir writing for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (University of Minnesota).

Summer Camp!

Hey all,

I holed myself up writing these past few weeks to finish work on my McKnight Established Artist grant, but  just the other day I received a beautiful color brochure reminding me that I was invited to teach a week-long summer camp writing class for kids at Crossings at Carnegie. If you or someone you know has children in Southeastern Minnesota send them my way  this July for fun storytelling games.

Gratitude and Meat

Hey all,

I’m currently working on an article about the Nerstrand Meat Market. Thinking back on my interview with owner Clyde, and his wife of 50 years Mary, makes me realize how lucky I am to be able to spend time with people like them. Especially since they gave me loads of samples.

Grant Review and Thank You

I am working my way through the final stages of the McKnight Established Artist grant I was awarded in 2012. In reviewing the results I can safely, confidently and gratefully say that this entire process has gone over extremely well. The public event was well-attended, well-recieved. And, I am so thankful for the time to just write and for the time to work on a book proposal for my memoir collection. I want to thank two extraordinary women I have had the pleasure of working with through this process: Suzanne Nielsen and Catherine Friend.

But, as Jay-Z says, “Onto the Next One…”

Last night’s reading…

Hi all,

I am so grateful to all the folks who came out last night to the Northfield Public Library to my public reading event. This event was supported by the McKnight Established Artist Grant awarded from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council.

A special thank you goes out to the community members who dropped by not knowing what they were getting into. And, as always, a very special gratitude extends to my former students at the Cannon Valley Elder Collegium. They continue to inspire me everyday. They all have so many stories to tell yet and I can’t wait to hear them.

I know several folks asked last night if I have any upcoming classes in the works. I will post updates regarding that in the near future. As for right now, I am finishing up my grant requirements this month. However, I am seeking out new teaching possibilities. Any suggestions regarding venues and/or classes to teach are welcomed via email.

I’d also like to thank the Northfield Public Library, without there support the event wouldn’t have been possible. I hope that in the future we will work together again to host a local voices reading again.

Update and Upcoming Class

Hey all,

I am busy doing many re-writes and working on new stories for my first full-length memoir collection. I am also planning a public reading to take place in February 2013. This event will feature writers from my writing course for the Cannon Valley Elder Collegium.

In December, I will be teaching a course at Crossings At Carnegie. They have invited me back after the success of my first course. I am extremely honored and excited to engage with students again. More updates and details to come…

Chicago and Grants

Hey All,

I am sitting in my favorite new spot in Chicago, First Slice Pie. My two favorite pies in the case are the Strike Pie in honor of CPS teachers and Tabasco Cream Pie. Tonight I will join my best friend, Chad Seader for a Neighborhood Writing Alliance meeting. I am thrilled to see how their program works and incorporate some of their methods into my own teaching. In the meanwhile, it’s official now…The Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council posted my grant on their page. It is an honor to have been chosen. I cannot wait to work on my book proposal and work sample for my first collection of memoir.¬†I better get writing…after I have just one more slice of pie.
